Decorating the Kids’ Bedroom

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

Home decorating can be a lot of fun, regardless of the room you’re working on. If you’re looking to decorate a room for children, that can be almost as fun as decorating you own room – unless, of course, the child is already overbearing in his/her opinions and feels the need to make all the choices over his/her possessions despite the fact that he/she contributes absolutely nothing financially. But here I digress.

One of the most important things to consider in shopping for bedroom furniture for your kids is safety. You want materials that are durable and well crafted so the stuff sticks around for Kid 2 (and god forbid, Kid 3). Find bedroom furniture that is crafted of hardwood solids, such as maple, oak, or cherry. Also be sure to examine the joints of the furniture. You want to make sure the manufacturer used proper joints. This is always important, but especially with kids’ furniture. Sometimes cheap furniture works with adults, but it never lasts with kids. If the whole bed is held together with staples and glue, you know it won’t last a day longer than that kid’s crawling. They’re small, but they’re mighty – they jump on furniture and break things before they’re even mobile. So unless you want to buy new bedroom furniture every fifteen minutes, you better shell out for the good stuff.

More often than not, the kids’ room is a smaller room. And if Kid 2 comes around before you have a place to put him, you’re going to find that little room squeezed for space. So when it comes to bedroom furniture for children, try to find pieces that save space. One way to save space is the bunk. Even if you only have one kid, you can put him on a bunk, and then put a little bookshelf or dresser underneath it to save space. Another way to save space is by choosing furniture that serves a double function: a toy chest/chair, a trundle bed, an armoire/bar, etc. You need to think practically. You also need to think ahead, which takes me to another point: wall colors.

Remember back in the olden days, when people didn’t know what they were getting with a baby and so they didn’t want to do the room pink or blue? Well, we know now what the kid will look like, but really, do we know what we’re getting at the end of the day? No, we sure don’t. So one lasting piece of advice: keep the walls neutral. Kids grow up so fast and go through so many different phases, and you really don’t want to be catering to his/her every color whim. The colors and bedroom furniture can be neutral. That’s guaranteed to last and not present an issue. All other décor comes and goes with each rising Hollywood child star’s inevitable fade into vice and deprivation. So for now it’s white walls with a Hannah Montana poster, and tomorrow it’s white walls with someone else on a poster.

Eventually they’ll be teenagers and they’ll want none of this stuff, but they’ll demand you buy them new bedroom furniture and they’ll paint their walls whatever color they want even if you tell them not to. That’s the joy of parenthood. Enjoy decorating while they’re still too young to verbalize an opinion.

Bedroom Window Curtains – Get Creative With Bedroom Window Curtains

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

Decorating a bedroom consists of many things, but small things matter the most. By small things I mean decorating accessories and window curtains is such an accessory that creates a major impact when the decorating is finished.

Bedroom window curtains have two main purposes. The first and the obvious is cut down unnecessary direct sunlight entering the bedroom. This is possible if your bedroom window is facing outside and directly towards sun path. In such a case bedroom window curtains are a great way to control the intensity of light in bedroom interiors.

The second most common use of window curtains is privacy. For this happen a thick curtain cloth is used which can cut the view of bedroom interior from outside. If your home building is on a bust street or congested areas, then such types of curtains can be very effectively used for privacy.

However apart from these two primary uses a bedroom curtains have one more important use of their own and that is it’s visual effect. A window curtain can act as a great visual media in the bedroom interiors. You can use a window curtain as a big painting or wallpaper with a selected theme. For example a bedroom which is abutting a sea shore, a full height window curtain can be used to bring the beauty of the seashore into your bedroom in the form of a print on the curtain.

Another great use of bedroom window curtains is it’s capacity to filter light. A transparent window curtain can be used to disperse colored light into the bedroom by creating a lovely and romantic environment. If the design patter of the curtain cloth has flowers or intricate embroidery then this effect can be magnified with creative ideas. Transparent cloth can filter light by controlling the intensity at the same time cast shadows of cloth pattern on interior bedroom walls, thus adding excitement.

Tips For Successful Teen Bedroom Design

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

Teen bedroom design can be challenging but can also have it’s rewards. Whether you have a girl or boy, teenagers are busy exploring their own way in the world. They are trying out different things and figuring out what works for them and what doesn’t. They are also asserting their independence. What better way for them to do that than to take part in designing the room that they’ll be spending a lot of time in as they complete their school years and prepare for what is ahead.

If you have a girl, chances are she’s outgrown the pink or lavender colors that most likely graced her room as a young child. She’s testing the waters and picking out what she likes. At this point, she probably does have a favorite color and this would be a good place to start. If you start with her favorite color and then look to the things that she’s interested in when considering wall art or accessories for her room, this will bring the room together nicely. For example, if yellow is her favorite color and she’s really interested in music, start with yellow paint for her walls. Choose a shade with her so that she feels she’s a part of the process and that her opinion matters. When the room is painted, look for items to add to her walls that enhance her tastes. Perhaps a large musical note can be displayed on the wall or some wallpaper border with musical notes displayed throughout to line the tops of the walls.

Similarly, a boy should be given the same type of consideration as a girl when choosing the decor for his room. However, it may be a little more difficult to get him involved in the whole process, yet if you ask him to own the process by being a part of all of it; the painting and wallpapering, as well as the shopping and decorating, more willingness may evolve. Again, start with his favorite color, then take him with to choose the paint from the hardware store. When it comes time to paint his walls, ask him to help. Take him back to the store to choose the items that will be purely decorative. If he’s into model boats or trains, ask him to build a few to later hang with fish line from his ceiling. Adding the feel of ownership over the project will help your young man jump in with two feet and you’ll end with a room that you can both be happy about.

A blissful teenager may not result from these events, yet they won’t be moody over their bedroom. It will be an area that they will enjoy being in and that will help when they need to concentrate on a school project or something along those lines. Best of all, they will have taken at least some part in the creation of the room, so they will be excited about it when it’s done. Never pass up the chance to have a happy teenager, even when it means entering into a teen bedroom design project with them.

4 Decorating Ideas For Boys Bedroom

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

The saying that boys will always be boys is truer than ever, especially when they want to come up with boys bedroom decorating ideas.

However, incorporating boys bedroom decorating ideas does not have to be focused so much on cars and robots. You may want your little boys to find their rooms unique, and so a little touch of creativity will do them good.

Here’s a list of some boys bedroom decorating ideas that you can use as guides:

1. First impression count

First impression counts, so polish up your front door. If you want to make everybody know that they are about to enter a boy’s bedroom, it is best that you let them know beforehand.

You can have your boy’s favorite cartoon character painted at the door. In this way, the design will serve as an introduction of what they are about to see once they get in.

2. Lamps

One of the best boys bedroom decorating ideas is to use lamps that will definitely add light and life to your son’s haven. You can use more boyish designs if want. Just keep in mind that lighting is important for every room. Lamps can deliver this function well, especially for those bedrooms that lack windows.

3. Artsy letters

You can always create individualism and project your child’s distinctiveness by using letters. Try to use letters of different designs and spell out your son’s name. You can hang them in the ceiling or fix them in the wall just above the bed.

There are ready-made letters from arts and crafts store or you can make your own designs. You can even ask your son to do the design he wants. This will serve as a good binding moment with him.

4. Keeping things tidy

You can teach your child to maintain cleanliness in his room by using decorative shelves where he can easily stack away his robots or other toys after playing.

Bookshelves are the best organizers. They should be put in order and should hold everything that your son holds dear like his cars, his favorite comic books, toys, and other gadgets.

Boys Bedroom Ideas – Decorating Boys Rooms

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

When it comes to decorating a boy’s room we tend to feel a bit stuck on ideas. The one thing about boys is most really don’t care what their room looks like they are more interested in their toys or play stations etc.

So really it’s easier to just keep it simple.

Here is what I did when I decorated my boys room. I painted the walls the same color as the lounge room which was beige; so that color flowed through, then I bought a big check or tartan fabric that had the beige in it, the other colors in the tartan check were navy blue, red. I made a quilt cover and curtain pelmets out of the tartan then I got navy blue material and made a sham (or bed skirt which was box pleated) for the bed and pillow cases, I made curtains out of the navy. And then I made tie backs in the tartan fabric.

So the theme followed right the room. Now if the theme was to be changed all I had to do was change the tartan fabric and you would have a whole new look in the room. I did this when my son was 12 now he is turning 21 and he still likes the tartan and the navy curtains. Boys tend to like dark colors. So let them have the dark colors in the curtains but keep the walls light.

When boys are younger they tend to want their favorite character quilt cover. So by keeping the walls a nice soft color to create space and keeping the curtains a plain color a new quilt cover and pillow cases can be bought and the room and take on a whole new look.

The one thing with boys is teaching them to be organized at a young age then it follows through into being an adult. Instead of having a toy box where everything just gets thrown in have boxes for each group of toys, such all cars in one box, building blocks in another etc. This way toys don’t get thrown in together and get broken and it teaches boys how to be organized.

These boxes can be put onto a book shelf that has been built abet deeper so that the boxes can fit into the shelving. Keep the shelving low, you don’t want him climbing on them. The boxes can be made of plastic which probably more durable, but if you’re on a budget you can buy some really nice cardboard boxes these days. If you have a handy husband they could even make the boxes out of light timer and painted in the same colors of the room.

So there some ideas to get you started on decorating your boys room, its really not hard. Think long term, keep it simple and plain so its easy to change as they grow, that’s always the easy option.

Bedroom Painting Ideas – Making Your Bedroom Look More Inviting

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

Before you start painting your bedroom with your favorite color, you first need to know that there rules in painting your bedroom. Since this is your private retreat and is a part of the house that is least visited by other people, you can experiment and be creative about the decoration as well as the wall color. However, you should also follow the three basic rules in choosing the color for your room.

1. The first rule is the color family rule. For example, if you want to paint your room with the color blue, you should consider having a decoration inside your bedroom that will also have the shade of blue. This is called monochromatic schemes that is simple to do and very popular for most people. So, if you like a particular color for your bedroom wall, you should also get a shade of that color in as your lampshade color, your bed sheet color and also your picture frame color.

2. The second rule is the next door neighbor color rule. If you are familiar with the color wheel, you will have an idea on what kinds of color you should put in your bedroom. For example, if you like red, then the colors next to it in the color wheel will prove to be great combinations. If you choose red then you should also use the colors orange and violet. If you choose blue, then the colors green and violet can prove to be a great combination and so on. This color scheme is called the analogous color scheme.

3. The third rule is the Ying and Yang rule. Chinese beliefs suggest that you should have adequate Yin and Yang in your house. This means that there should be opposites of everything and this will include the colors. And, this proves to be true. It can create a harmonious environment that you will truly love. Most people love the basic black and white combination. You can experiment with different dark and light shades of colors and determine which can provide you with a great looking bedroom.

These are the three basic rules in providing a comfortable and relaxing environment in your bedroom. Be creative and you will definitely have different ideas on what colors you should paint your bedroom with.

Contemporary Bedroom Furniture: Today’s Trends

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

Contemporary bedroom trends today combine all sorts of stylistic elements to create a look that is unique. Contemporary home décor combines the traditional with the modern, and local trends with global influences.

While contemporary design, despite its influences, remains cool, sleek, and uncluttered, this doesn’t mean that your bedroom will end up creating a cold atmosphere. Here are three hints on how to create a sleek, simple, and contemporary bedroom design with the added warmth fit for a bedroom.

Hint No. 1

First of all, choose a neutral color scheme for your walls, floors and furniture. Neutral colors are the best choices for contemporary design. Neutral colors in the bedroom produce a fresh and clean look. They also make the perfect backdrop for a favorite modern painting, which can add a splash of color. Keep in mind that contemporary bedroom trends use color only to accessorize and never as the basic design statement.

Hint No. 2

In the bedroom, it is always the bed that is the central furniture piece. This is the piece that should be carefully designed and decorated. A contemporary bedroom will demand a bold looking bed. Choose a layered look by adding black and white, or black and red sheets. If you choose a pattern, then again it should be bold, such as rich red rose duvet cover.

In a contemporary bedroom with neutral walls, bold red on a bed will add warmth and atmosphere to your bedroom. It will also brighten the room, and make it more inviting, just what you want a bedroom to be.

Hint No. 3

Keep everything else to a minimum. Simple nightstands, subtle recessed reading lights, full-length mirrors, a pair of wooden, bamboo or chrome stools, on which you may place cushions matching the duvet cover.

Contemporary bedroom furniture trends seek out the best in modern sleek style, but add a touch of warmth and comfort.

Redecorate Your Teenage Girls Bedroom With Flair

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

If you’re getting ready to redecorate your teenage girls bedroom here are some tips to keep in mind.

You have the Internet as a source of all sorts of creative ideas to implement, and most of them don’t have to be very expensive at all.

The biggest thing I would say is talk to your daughter first. Get her input. After all she’s not a little child anymore.. she has opinions and preferences that make a difference.

She spends a lot of time in her bedroom if she’s like other teenagers I know, so getting it right will score you a lot of cool points. So make an effort to work with her so that her bedroom reflects her sense of style and not just yours. What kind of personality does she have.. is she outgoing wild and fun.. or more reserved and shy…?

If she’s shy, she probably won’t want a bedroom decked out in neon orange and black I would imagine…

Since the bed is naturally the main focal point of her bedroom, start there.

Does she need new bedding… if so what colors can both of you agree on for the comforter or duvet cover or blankets. Go for bed sheets that complement or offset your blanket or comforter choice so the colors don’t all blend in and become overwhelming.

For example, let’s say you agree that green and shades of green would be good for the comforters and or blankets. Why not go for a bold pink for your sheets and pillowcases to set everything off and make it look really cool…? Maybe it’s time to just have some fun and think outside of the box when you’re dealing with your favorite teenager. Get funky. She’ll love it and so will you.

Remember to consider the window treatments also, and keep away from drab humdrum and boring colors and textures. Mix it up- maybe find some corduroy or other interesting fabric in dark green or pink for her drapes using my example there.

Try a really cool novelty clock for the walls. Add a couple interesting shaped mirrors. Let her add some of her favorite posters- and add more interest by framing them with really cool deco art frames. Not too expensive either if you check out your local hobby shop.

Don’t forget area rugs and complementing colors and textures also. You could add some fresh paint, dress up areas of the wall using stencils, also very inexpensive at your local hobby shop.

You and your teenage girl can get together and really create a bedroom you’ll both be proud of, and one that she will spending time in- just let your creativity out and have fun.

Bedroom Decorating For a Rental

This item was filled under [ Bedroom Articles ]

If you are one of the many who live in rental homes or apartments, you have probably been frustrated in the past with your limitations as far as home décor. As paint is the simplest way to stimulate your space from lifeless to breathtaking, you are certainly restricted if your landlord will not let you alter the color of your walls. Yet another issue with rental homes is nail holes. Often landlords ask that you do not place any holes in the walls, so hanging photos and wall art is difficult. In order to bring energy and harmony to your rental property, you must think outside of the box as far as decorating.

Put away your paintbrush and grab some fabric! Taking a main bedroom as an example, choose a fabric that contrasts or complements your bedding and surrounding décor. Examine the blank canvas of your walls and decide which would work best as a feature wall or focal point of the room. There are many possibilities with fabric. Purchase some extra large 16 x 20 picture frames in similar colors but varying styles. Cut your fabric to fit inside the frames. Map out the best way to hang your works of art by laying your frames out on the floor and drawing yourself a map on the wall. You can create a collage with the frames that will be an instant eye catcher the second you walk into the room.

If you’d rather have a large image take up the entire wall, consider an oversized poster. A 54 x 20 framed image or piece of artwork will fill up a wall amply. If using a smaller frame, try grouping your art with other items such as small shelves layered with books or special trinkets from your travels. If your landlord has a no-nail policy for the walls, try 3M Wall picture-hanging strips. Using a heavy duty adhesive, your frames will be hung on the walls without the pain of a hammer and nails.

Adding color to a non-paintable room is as simple as purchasing a large area rug. Contemporary area rugs come in a variety of colors, patterns, and shapes. Consider having your area rug be the focal point of your room by choosing a bold pattern or hue.

Lighting is important in any room, and in a rental property it’s not uncommon to purchase your own lighting and take it with you when you leave. In a main bedroom, chandeliers provide a soft, romantic glow while providing you with the feel of instant lavishness.

If you have plain walls, be sure to purchase the appropriate curtains or window coverings. With no bright colors on the wall to share space with, you can focus on lush fabrics and dark colors such as velvet, silk, or brushed cotton. Avoid sheer fabrics in light colors, as they will only create a washed out look on your windows.

Whether you are in a rental property for a short duration or a long stay, you can change the décor to suit your style and mood without painting. All it takes is a little creative ingenuity and an ability to look beyond the walls to the details that really make the room belong to you.
